THE HORSE PHOTOGRAPHER | MATTHEW SEED
A childhood passion to worldwide recognition
I was twelve years old | Destiny in my hands
"I was twelve when I discovered a camera for the first time; it was a form of magic to me."
At twelve, a fervent, six-month campaign aimed at my parents resulted in a Christmas gift that was not merely a camera, but my destiny.
I was instantly, irrevocably consumed by the art of image-making. In that era of film, the process felt like pure, unadulterated alchemy—freezing a fleeting moment into an eternal memory.
The intoxicating freedom of creation was an immediate addiction. This was a moment of clarity for me; I was born to be a photographer.
In the beginning | My truth
"My fascination with horses was not a sudden passion, but a slow, quiet unfolding of a deep, emotional truth."
Drawn to the bright lights | Time to learn
"Lighting quickly became my obsession, and what followed was years of learning my craft."
I began my career in the demanding world of a high-end commercial, advertising, and fashion photography studio. Little did I know that my initial role, seemingly humble, would place me in the presence of the UK’s leading photographers.
Over the next twelve years, I embarked on a steep and transformative journey, rising from a studio assistant to a senior photographer In one of the most challenging studios in the country. I immersed myself in the art of lighting, studying how the industry’s best harnessed it for maximum creative impact.
Mastering it became my singular goal. Eventually, I took the leap to establish my own advertising studio. This new chapter brought collaborations with globally recognised brands such as Pepsi, Lacoste, Reebok, Netflix, and Nike.
The success of my business was the realisation of a lifelong ambition.
Or so I thought.
A project from the heart | My unique vision
"The precise visual outcome of this experiment is yet to be defined."
My lifelong affinity for horses provided the foundation for a new creative endeavour. The concept was to apply my extensive knowledge of professional studio lighting to the field of equine photography. This approach was entirely novel; there was no existing technical blueprint or established reference point. Driven by a personal vision rather than a commercial strategy, I initiated the project without preliminary research.
I arranged to borrow a friend’s horse and entered the field equipped with a large-format Hasselblad camera and a complex lighting rig. It was at this initial moment that the scale of the challenge became clear. The precise visual outcome of this experiment is yet to be defined.
The first step was to establish a connection. I paused the technical setup and spent time engaging with the horse, Elgar, allowing the familiar, comfortable rapport I remembered so well from my youth to re-emerge. When the timing felt right, the photographic session began. This empathic approach came naturally to me; little did I know it was to form the basis of my entire ethos.
The photography was highly intuitive and “in the moment.” That day, Elgar and I successfully developed a distinct, new style of horse photography. It was a day that would change my life forever. I left that field inspired, emotional & tremendously excited.
What followed was many years refining my style, enjoying every minute with these beautiful and inspiring animals.
